2018 Waste Management Phoenix Open – The Greatest Show on Grass!

Date: January 29 - February 4, 2018
Purse:
$6,900,000

The Waste Management Phoenix Open, also known as the Phoenix Open, is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour that’s held in late January/early February at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) of Scottsdale, Arizona. The event's relaxed atmosphere, raucous by the standards of professional golf (poor shots can receive boos if the hole is very easy by the PGA's standards and good shots are cheered loudly), has earned it the nickname “The Greatest Show on Grass.” One of the most popular events on the PGA Tour calendar, The Phoenix Open began 86 years ago in 1932 but was discontinued after the 1935 tournament. The golf open started back up in 1939 when Bob Goldwater, Sr. convinced fellow Thunderbirds, a prominent civic organization in Phoenix, to help run the event. The tournament moved in 1987 to its current home, the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale, northeast of downtown Phoenix.

The four-day attendance of the tournament is typically around a half million people, the best-attended event in golf. The event has gained legendary status for being unlike any other golf tournament. The most popular location for spectators is the par-3 16th hole, nicknamed "The Coliseum." Famous moments at the 16th Include Tiger Woods' hole-in-one in 1997, which caused the gallery to go bonkers, throwing cups and other objects in celebration, and Justin Leonard giving the finger to the gallery after a poor shot. After 2013, the PGA Tour banned the practice of caddies racing the 150 yards from the tee box to the green, due to injury concerns.

When the golf game ends the party heats up at the Coors Light Bird's Nest. For four nights every year, the hottest nightclub in Scottsdale is located inside a tent erected in north Scottsdale. With great music and enthusiastic partying, the Coors Light Birds Nest has earned its legendary status on the PGA TOUR, offering a show all its own. The Coors Light Bird's Nest has brought some of the biggest names in music over the years including, Kid Rock, Afrojack, Tiesto, Darius Rucker and more.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is the most fan-friendly tournament venue on the PGA TOUR, attracting the largest galleries of any golf tournament in the world. Crowds have increased over the years and so has the tournament purse. Three-time Phoenix Open winner Phil Mickelson (the most popular golfer at the Waste Management Phoenix Open) leads the all-time Phoenix Open Money List earning $3,694,782 through 24 tournament appearances. Two-time Phoenix Open Champion J.B. Holmes is second on the all-time money list earning $2,274,780 through 8 tournament appearances.

The list of professional golfers who have won in Phoenix include Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demaret, Billy Casper, Gene Littler, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Miller Barber, Johnny Miller, Ben Crenshaw, Lee Janzen, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Tom Lehman, Mark Calcavecchia and Kenny Perry, just to name a few.
