Located in Maricopa County Arizona, the city of Tempe was named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece, a gorge in the Tempi municipality of northern Thessaly, Greece. Located in the heart of the city is the popular Tempe Town Lake. A  system of paths allows for walking, jogging, and biking alongside the lake, which is more than two miles long. Tempe Town Lake is also a great place for wind and human-powered boats. Papago and South Mountain Parks offer hiking, mountain and road biking, rock climbing, frisbee golf, and equestrian activities. For baseball fans, Tempe Diablo Stadium is home to Cactus League spring training baseball.  


Tempe Transportation Center

Major routes serving the city include Interstate 10 near the western edge, Loop 202 crossing the northern side, Loop 101 following the eastern border, and U.S. Route 60 running east-west through the center of the city. Valley Metro operates bus routes and the Valley Metro Rail system that serves Downtown Tempe and Arizona State University, providing service to Phoenix and Mesa. The Tempe Transportation Center is located at 200 E. Fifth Street (near Forest and College avenues) at the base of A-Mountain. The facility has an exterior shaded courtyard and a transit plaza serving the METRO light rail and local and regional bus patrons. Dozens of bus routes serve the Transportation Center including the free Orbit local shuttle. The Bicycle Cellar, located at the Tempe Transportation Center, is a place where Tempe bicycle riders are able to leave their bikes locked up indoors securely with key card access, 24-hour security, and a security guard on watch.
