The city of Maricopa has experienced major growth since its inception in 2003, with people moving to the Phoenix area in search of more affordable housing and wide-open spaces. Maricopa is located about 35 miles south of Phoenix (Maricopa County), and part of the Phoenix metro area. A portion of the city of Maricopa is within the boundaries of the Ak-Chin Indian Community, which has developed Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino and related resort, a multi-entertainment cinema complex, and operates a golf course - attracting people from all over the greater Phoenix area.
Maricopa has a number of desirable residential communities - each with its own unique set of features, lifestyle amenities, and home types. Some of the best communities in Maricopa include Acacia Crossings (nearest to East Valley and Phoenix); Cobblestone Farms (Fulton Homes); Desert Cedars & Alterra Area; Desert Passage & Santa Rosa Area; Homestead (near the heart of Maricopa); Glennwilde (near Banner Health Center); Rancho El Dorado & The Villages; Province (Voted best active adult community in the U.S. in 2006 by the National Association of Home Builders); Rancho Mirage (Shea Homes); and Senita (located just south of the Villages at Rancho El Dorado).

The newer Maricopa Station includes a Starbucks, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Zoyo Neighborhood Yogurt, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Sports Clips, and Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers. The upscale Chandler Fashion Center mall and Phoenix Premium Outlets mall in Chandler are located about a 30-minute drive from town. Family-oriented events held in Maricopa include the Maricopa Salsa Festival, Fishing Derby, Founder’s Day Celebration, and Holiday Homes on Parade.
