The city of Scottsdale is loosely divided into four areas which include South Scottsdale, Old Town (Downtown) Scottsdale, Central Scottsdale (Shea Corridor), and North Scottsdale. Old Town features boutique shopping, restaurants, nightlife and is home to a number of galleries, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Scottsdale's Museum of the West. There is one alternative school building in Scottsdale. 

Paradise Valley Unified School District is a large public school district that provides educational opportunities for those in Phoenix and a portion of Scottsdale. Within this district, there are 30 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 high schools. The district provides students with several different alternative programming options, including a S.T.E.M. program, an International Baccalaureate program, and a Digital Learning Center. Parents may also decide to send their children to one of the public charter schools within this community. There are about a dozen charter schools in Scottsdale, including the Scottsdale Country Day School that serves grades K-6 and the Foothills Academy College Preparatory School that serves grades 7-12.

Many of the charter schools in Scottsdale receive high rankings and are an option for those who are looking for an alternative to the traditional public school system. There are several highly-ranked private schools in Scottsdale such as Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which serves grades K-8, and Thunderbird Adventist Academy, which serves grades 9-12.
