January is also the month of Martin Luther King Day Celebrations and Phoenix has more than almost any other U.S. City. Below is a list of some of the best Phoenix-area festivals, activities, and events taking place during the month of January and beyond:

Music Festivals and Events

The greater Phoenix area has numerous festivals and concert events going on all throughout the month. If you enjoy classical music, you won’t want to miss the Arizona Bach Festival in Phoenix or the Arizona Musicfest in nearby Scottsdale. In addition, the Chandler Symphony Orchestra's January concert, which is held at the Chandler Center for the Arts, is an equally great way to experience some world-class classical music performances. Chandler also offers family-friendly concerts at Chandler's Environmental Education Center as part of their Sonoran Sunset Series this month.

Sports Events

During the month of January, sports fans can enjoy an abundance of greater Phoenix area sports events and activities, including professional games. The local Arizona Cardinals football team is in the season the entire month along with the Phoenix Suns basketball team and the Arizona Coyotes hockey team. During the last week of January, the TPC Scottsdale golf course hosts the annual Waste Management Phoenix Open Golf Tournament, dubbed the "Greatest Game on Grass.” The golf tournament is the PGA TOUR’s best-attended event, drawing nearly 500,000 spectators each year. Also happening this month is the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon, which starts in Phoenix, continues through Scottsdale and finishes in Tempe. Featuring a 5K, 10K, Kids' Run, Expo, and live music along the entire route, it's also the largest combined running event in the country and a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Art Walks & Community Events

The greater Phoenix area encourages community engagement and activity. Art and community walks are extremely popular and this month, the cities of Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Guadalupe and the town of Gilbert come together to promote mutual respect and understanding during the Regional Unity Walk. The event commences in Tempe and makes its way throughout the greater Phoenix area. Also this month, the Chandler Multicultural Festival has teamed up with the Chandler International Film Festival and Creative + Cultural, offering an eclectic weekend of cultural performances, international films, food, and fun for the entire family, held in downtown Chandler.

  • Meet Me Downtown (Phoenix social walk/run in the heart of the city)
  • Downtown Chandler Art Walk (A fun family atmosphere where you can browse over 50 talented artist’s work, featuring local artists, musicians, and more)
  • Gilbert Art Walk (A family-friendly, pet-friendly, art show with live music. Enjoy a vast array of art mediums including jewelry, painting, ceramics, woodworking, photography and more)
  • 2nd Friday Night Out in Mesa (50+ artists showcasing original artwork, live bands, food vendors, entertainment, gallery openings, contests with prizes, shops, and restaurants open late, and much more)
  • Scottsdale ArtWalk (A large, easy-going open house for the Scottsdale Arts District located primarily along Main Street and Marshall Way in Scottsdale Downtown)

Special Interest Events

January is prime time for auto shows and events in the Phoenix area such as the popular Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction at WestWorld in North Scottsdale, the Arizona Concours d’Elegance in Phoenix, and the Military Vehicle Show in Tempe. Other popular auctions include the Russo & Steele Classic Car Auction, the Gooding & Company Car Auction, and the RM Sotheby's Auction.  For gun enthusiasts, the Crossroads of the West Gun Show is geared towards the novice, hunter to the avid collector and held at Mesa Centennial Hall in Mesa. Also in mid-January is the Maricopa County Home and Garden Show, which will feature hundreds of exhibitors, seminars, demonstrations, and displays, held at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix.    

Food & Wine Events

Phoenix is the best place to be this month for foodies and wine lovers, with several festivals taking place celebrating the traditions of food and drink in Arizona. The Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater is home to the Arizona Vegetarian Food Festival, featuring health and wellness vendors, guest speakers, vegetarian food companies, vegan restaurants, and more. Also, this month is the third annual Tacolandia held at Margaret T. Hance Park in Downtown Phoenix. This year's taco festival will feature the city's best taquerias serving up authentic Mexican cuisine and live entertainment that highlights Mexican culture. And if you love chocolate and wine, you won't want to miss the Chocolate and Wine Experience, hosted by the Scottsdale League for the Arts and held at the Saguaro Scottsdale.   

Movies & Film Events

City Lights Movie Night presents free movies at CityScape in downtown Phoenix, and the Phoenix Art Museum hosts Movies at the Museum featuring independent and classic cinema. The well-attended Chandler International Film Festival (CIFF) takes place January 17 -21st. CIFF will be screening over 200 films at this annual event and has teamed up with the City of Chandler in their multicultural festival. This star-studded, four-day festival will include a Red Carpet Opening Ceremony, Special World Premiere Shows, Film-making Workshops, Discussion Panels, Film Market & Expo, and Award Ceremony.

Art Festivals & Events

For art lovers, there are multiple art festivals and events taking place throughout the greater Phoenix area this month, including the Native American Arts Festival, held at downtown Litchfield Park in Phoenix. The festival features some of the finest traditional and contemporary artists in the Southwest. MACFest (Mesa Arts and Crafts Festival), is a free family-friendly event featuring artist creations, music, and entertainment in Mesa. From January to March, you can enjoy the work of more than 100 world-class artists in Scottsdale at the Arizona Fine Art Expo. Meet artists in their studios and experience the creation of fine art and collect original works of art directly from award-winning, renowned and emerging artists. The Celebration of Fine Art referred to as "One of the World's premier art events" by Arts & Antiques Magazine is also taking in Scottsdale this month. Interact with or simply watch these artists as they create their work, including sculpture, paintings, jewelry, glass blowing, photography, furniture and more, over the course of the eight-week show.
