Located in North Scottsdale, McDowell Sonoran Preserve provides many trailheads with a variety of trails for both beginners and experts. Gateway Trail and Sunrise Peak are among some of the local favorites. Peak hiking season begins in late October and can run through winter into spring. There are 59 moderate trails in Scottsdale ranging from 1.9 to 52.2 miles and from 1,686 to 5,209 feet above sea level. Some of the best trails in Scottsdale include:

  • Camelback Mountain via Echo Canyon Trail is a 2.5 mile heavily trafficked out-and-back trail and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.  
  • Pinnacle Peak Trail is a 4-mile heavily trafficked out-and-back trail and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.
  • Gateway Loop Trail is a 4.2-mile heavily trafficked loop trail and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and mountain biking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on a leash.
  • Blue Wash Trail is a 2.8-mile heavily trafficked out-and-back trail that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and horses. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on a leash.
  • Lost Dog Wash Trail to Ringtail Trail Loop is a 4.4-mile heavily trafficked loop trail that features beautiful wildflowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on a leash.
  • Inspiration Point is a 5.7-mile out-and-back trail that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and running. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on a leash.

Golf 

Home to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Phoenix area boasts more than 200 golf courses, many of which are accessible to the public. Each year when the PGA Tour converges on TPC Scottsdale for the “Greatest Show on Grass,” thousands of recreational golfers escape the cold winter weather for sunny skies set against picturesque desert mountain vistas in central Arizona. If you want to play TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course, you will be paying a hefty price. In the weeks after the Phoenix Open, which is the high season for golf in the area, the TPC Scottsdale green fee is as high as $384 at the peak of the day. The green fee goes down to $259 after 2 p.m. Prices start to go down in April to a maximum of $289 per player. 

Yes, you can easily pay a couple of hundred dollars for a round of golf in Scottsdale but you can also find deals even during peak season. Many courses cut their greens fees by more than 50% for late-morning or early-afternoon tee times. Three courses to try out include the Silverado Golf Course (afternoon tee times for $50 or less), the McDowell Mountain Golf Club (afternoon tee times are around $100), and the Boulders Club offering two scenic championship courses ((afternoon tee time are around $180).

Many Scottsdale golf clubs, including We-Ko-Pa Golf Club and Wildfire Golf Club, have multiple courses and offer bounce-back rates so you can play the courses for a discounted fee on different days. Or, consider teeing off at one of these municipal courses: Continental Golf CourseCoronado Golf Course, or Papago Golf Course. There are also a number of top-rated courses outside Scottsdale’s city limits that have fewer golfers, incredible views, and lower prices like the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf CourseVerde River Golf & Social Club, and Desert Canyon Golf Club, among others.

Transportation

Public transportation in the Phoenix area is provided by Valley Metro, which includes trains, buses, and a rideshare program. The 26-mile Valley Metro Rail, referred to simply as "the light rail" by locals, connects downtown Phoenix to Tempe, Mesa, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport by way of the PHX Sky Train. From end to end, there are currently 38 stations, including 11 park-and-ride stations. Use Valley Metro's trip planner to find the best route to your destination using light rail and busses (Metro Rail Maps and Schedules). Bicyclists may bring their bikes aboard the train.  

Metro light rail trains depart stations at each end of the route every 12 minutes from about 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and every 20 minutes at other times. Trains start running at about 3:30 a.m. on weekdays and 4 a.m. on weekends and holidays. The last full trip of the day on Monday through Thursday begins at 11 p.m., arriving at the opposite end of the line at about 12:25 a.m. early the next morning. On Friday nights and Saturday nights (Saturday and Sunday mornings) the last full trip is at 2 a.m., arriving at the opposite end of the line at 3:25 a.m.  

Metro light rail fares: single-ride tickets cost $2; an all-day pass is $4. Passes for seven days ($20), 15 days ($33), and 31 days ($64) are also available. Certain groups can get a discount—including seniors ages 65 and older, students, Medicare cardholders, and the disabled—children five and under ride for free with an adult. Passengers must have proof of eligibility to qualify for reduced fares. 

In addition to the light rail system, Valley Metro operates the local, express, and RAPID bus services and rural and neighborhood circulars - covering 513 square miles. Many attractions, including the Heard Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, and the Arizona Science Center, are along the light rail's route. Valley Metro Rail is also ideal for events. Parking in downtown Phoenix can be a challenge for sporting events, concerts, and First Fridays, so many people park at one of the park-and-ride lots and take the light rail to their desired destination.  

Two major airports serve the East Valley including Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with over 1000 flights per day and the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport located in South Mesa.
